Post HD Collapsing soon, Deafcon 1
Been away from my PC for a while. I've had it 5-6 years and have added RAM and a new graphics card during its life.

Came back to after 5 months and tried updating things here and there as it was running considerably slower. Tried many things to improve performance and such and then all of a sudden blue screens and disk checks. Ran these and did more button pressing and recently a "BAD S.M.A.R.T check" appeared every time I boot. Looked into it and seems my HD might be failing. Did some tests using CrystalDiskInfo.

Read Error Rate 1
Current Pending Sector Count 98
Status Bad

Now this points to the question, is my HD going to fail soon?

Also any recommendations for new ones. Looking to spend under £60 and need 500GB of memory.

Cheers.

Should be able to get a 1TB WD Blue for like 40£. Should be fine, assuming you don't need an SSD.

Yeah storage is pretty cheap these days, I also heard you can download more gigabytes of space from some websites, not sure how legit that is though. Worth checking out.

I've considered it. I know SSDs are pricey and am willing to drop the memory capacity but was wondering how hard the transfer of the hard drives files would be? Similar to a hard drive to hard drive?

Once again any recommendations are welcome.

Any excuse for reinstalling Windows is a good one. You should probably do that if you get a new HDD to boot off anyway, fairly sure you can't just copy the files across and have everything be hunky dory.

When it comes to copying regular files HDD -> HDD = HDD -> SSD

SSDs are hard drives, silly. They just aren't limited to the physical laws of the universe.

If I fresh install windows on a new SSD and just switch it over with the old HD then what can I do about product keys?

Surely I will have to buy a new one or is there some work around.

If you have a windows key, why couldn't you just use that?

Depends on which version you bought, if you have an OEM copy then I'm quite sure you can use it again since that what I did last year. No promises though!

I've used the same window key on four different machines. Not at the same time, of course.

Not an expert, but DON'T buy Crucial. Their SSD's have been getting really shit reviews.

Opted for a Samsung evo 850 250gb.

Seemed to come up well in reviews.

Shall be installing it tomorrow.
